Career Research Project
The Career I chose to research was Crime Scene Investigation. A Crime Scene Investigator is a police officer who is specially trained to examine crime scenes and recover evidence. Some personality traits that are required as a crime scene investigator are for them to be patient, careful, and observant. Accuracy is also a key part in this job, so CSI's have to be very detail-oriented. They should also have highly developed problem-solving skills. CSI's need strong verbal and written communication skills, and they must also work well as a part of a team. Some central aspects that are looked at are; if you are interested in law, if you like keeping accurate records and reports, if you like work requiring accuracy and attention to detail. Some secondary aspects are; Seeking out and analyzing information, travelling around locally from place to place, coping with unpleasant or upsetting situations and doing small and detailed tasks needing careful handling. Some skills needed for this job are for you to be patient, observant, careful and detail-oriented, problem-solving skills, and communication skills. The main duties of being a CSI are as of following; Photograph and sketch crime scenes, to write down observations and take measurements, search for and collect physical evidence, such as fingerprints, fibers, and blood. Package, label, and document evidence, and write evidence reports. To analyze fingerprints and bloodstains, and testify in court. The typical earnings range is from $30,000 to $75,000 a year or more for regular police officers, which is the beginning stage of becoming a CSI. CSI's salaries are higher than those of regular police officers. CSI's who work for large, urban police forces generally make more than those employed by smaller forces. CSI's receive benefits such as dental coverage, paid vacation and sick days, and pension plans. For this job, you need to have gone and graduated from high school, Community College or Technical Training, and University. To get this job you have to have either a High School Diploma, a College Diploma, or a University Diploma. You have to meet the agency's minimum age requirement. It is better to have a College or University Diploma. Some courses I should take when I go to University are; Police Studies, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Criminology, Psychology and Law. Courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Forensics are highly beneficial for aspiring CSI's. New officers will need to spend 3-5 years working as a regular officer before they can apply to train as a CSI. Fully qualified CSI's are typically required to take continuing education throughout their careers. Application process for new CSI's is highly competitive, any prior training in forensics is helpful. Once you are selected, you will undergo 2-4 years of intensive training in crime scene analysis. You must pass all written and oral exams. For this job, you have to be prepared to work indoors or outdoors. You need 11 years experience. And a Criminology degree, which takes 4 years to complete. You divide your time between crime scenes and police stations, which means there's a lot of local travelling. This job can also be very distressing, and difficult for you to remain focused while examining unpleasant or even horrific crime scenes. When busy, CSI's work long hours. During quieter periods, they work around 40 hours. And you must be available for work whenever you are needed. You can find these jobs all over Canada such as BC, AB, and SK.
I think that i am suitable for this job, because i am not that easily sidetracked by blood and gore. I am sure that i can handle myself when i see stuff like i see in the videos i watch on stuff about crime scene investigation. I am interested in this career because of all the shows i watch, like Criminal Minds, CSI, and Hawaii 5-0. I have all the skills that are needed for this career like; Doing small and detailed tasks, explaining, listening, record keeping. Seeking out and analyzing information, problem solving, using number skills in counting, measuring and arithmetic. Reading, paying attention to detail and observing things. I think think this job suits me because you need to be patient, careful and observant, and i am all three of those things. I also like everything to be prefect, as i am a perfectionist. What concerns me about this career is that you have to wake up really early when training and it is like boot camp. I see myself pursuing this career, because when i want to do something, i am always committed until the very end. I will go to school for whichever courses i have to take, because this is my dream job.
